i havve been having problems with my laptop, i need to reinstall Windows Xp
again, but my product key label is like half missing, and i have tried the
Belarc
Advisor , but it does not match with the label*half of the label* that came
under the laptop, is there another way that i can get the the product key
again?, or would i have to call Microsoft, and ask for a new key?

The problem is that the manufacturer has a blanket product key that is
usually different from the one on the case.

I have two machines with the same manufacturers product key, that is
different than the ones on the cases.

First of all, what specific problems have you been having with this
laptop, and why do you believe a reinstallation is your best course of
action?

Second, what make is your laptop? Perhaps Nepatsfan or someone more
knowledgeable than I can chime in, but it's my understanding that Dells
don't require you to enter a key when you reinstall with the original
Dell disk (at least that was the case for me). I'm pretty sure that the
key on the sticker is to be used only when installing from a generic OEM
disk.

Since this is clearly an OEM version of Windows, Microsoft doesn't enter
the equation at all. Perhaps you can contact the laptop manufacturer.

i have a Dell Inspiron 1000 and it still ask for the produt key in the
label, since i need to format the whole hard drive, why i am formatting my
hard drive too? bc, that way i can make sure i would be installing a
fresh*almost brand new laptop >.>* althou is not brand new

I guess not all Dells are created equal. From "Question about Dell OEM
XP Pro re-installation CDs" at:

It should be noted that not all Dell machines have the correct BIOS key
and consequently, will require activation. For example, older beige
desktops as well as "fixed-config" (in other words, not
"built-to-order") machines will require activation. These include the
webpc, SmartPC, SmartStep, and some low-end laptops such as the Inspiron
1000.

So this might very well explain your situation.

I suppose you could try using the key you got from Belarc Advisor and
see what happens. If no joy, I would hope that you can contact Dell for
them to give you the key; since you purchased the license, you *should*
be entitled to the key IMO.

You still haven't told us why you wish to have an "almost brand new
laptop." What *specific* problems have you been experiencing? It would
probably be a lot easier addressing that (not to mention faster than
going through the whole reinstallation process).

basically my laptop was hacked, and one of my friends, did a scan well that
is what he told me, that probably somebody hacked my computer while i was
browsing, and some files were moved and others currupted, and also had a
virus, i did use many programs to scan for errors, even took it to a local
repair shop so they can check it, and they told me almost same thing as my
friend, that some files were currupted, right in the main core i guess you
can call it that, and i could only turn it on in SAFE mode, but i couldnt do
much, only turn on computer, and browse my files, at the moment i'm backing
up all my data, while using my friend's laptop for the moment

Unfortunately, you're not providing any *specific* information. If you
did, you might very well be able to solve your problem(s).

It sounds that you probably picked up malware from the Internet. I have
no idea how. Could have been P2P, opening an e-mail with a virus
attachment, downloading a rogue spyware program--any number of things.

You didn't tell us which anti-virus or anti-spyware programs were used
or the identities of suspicious files. Perhaps your friend who looked at
it did even more damage to it, which might explain why the local shop
couldn't do much of anything. I suppose we could try to figure out why
you can only boot in safe mode, but perhaps at this point a clean
install (or perhaps a repair) might need to do.

What kind of disk was furnished with your laptop? A reinstallation CD? A
recovery CD?

Have you seen:

(Or http://shurl.org/ZiyYD )

You can always click on the link to "Contact a Dell Technician" or the
link to "Chat with a Customer Service Representative." Tell them about
your key problem. Perhaps they can give you a key which will work.

Have you tried using the key you got from Belarc Advisor yet?

But I'm still puzzled by your statement that the "product key label is
like half missing." How does something like this happen. Did somebody
take a razor blade to the sticker?
