I recently purchased and installed WINDOWS XP Home Edition
upgrade and have encountered multiple problems. I thought
that doing away with WINDOWS ME would solve those problems
but I have more problems.
(1) I am getting a recurring message the Easy CD Creator
is causing Windows XP to become unstable. WHY?
(2)My DVD Movie Player now needs a different decoder
because of a compatibility problem. Why?
(3) The HP scanner that I had would not interact with
WINDOWS XP so I had to purchase another scanner.
(4) I have received a message that my Lexmark Z53 printer
could be a problem.
WHY ia warning noted on the box so that I would have known
that there would be multiple problems associated with this
upgrade. Getting assistance from Microsoft is tantamount
to pulling hens teeth and I am very dissatisfied with this
product that was supposed to be a much better product.

I am sorry about your issue but the fix is very easy.
Install SP-1A for XP. The issue is caused because XP does
not support the ASPI. This will solve your problems. HP
installs a firmware like the Compaq computers and this is
the issue. So if you start to see .sys errors this is
why, plus make sure that your bIOS is updated to the
latest version

Merrill,

It sounds like you didn't run the compatibility utility before you started.
That would have flagged the potential problem areas prior to starting the
upgrade process and allowed you to prepare for the upgrade more efficiently.

1. Because Roxio needs to update their utility to work with a new OS. You
might be able to download a free update or you may have to purchase a newer
version of the software. If the latter is the case (and assuming you are in
the US), you might look at the weekly specials at places like Staples,
OfficeMax, Office Depot, CompUSA, Best Buy, etc. Usually you can buy a new
CD-RW with Nero software for $10-30 after rebates. Compare this with buying
a new version of Roxio's software for $50-80 and the decision is easy! BTW,
a lot of us have abandoned Roxio's software and like Nero better (and much
better support, with updates for free!). NOTE: The software that comes with
CD-RW/DVD drives usually is "locked" to only work with that brand/model
drive.

2. Another utility (you don't tell us whose) that probably needs an update
or replacement. Check with the software vendor's Website (or the DVD mfr if
it was bundled).

3. HP Scanner - again you don't tell us the model, but HP "may" have
released WinXP compliant drivers, or they may not . . . you'd have to go to
their Website to determine if a solution was available. BTW, usually Win2K
drivers will work with WinXP if you can't find WinXP drivers.

4. Lexmark Z53 - see my comments for the HP scanner. Check for appropriate
drivers.

I know that everyone likes to blame Microsoft for all possible problems, but
take a step back and look at this logically . . . there are literally
millions of product combinations out there and ask yourself if it is
reasonable to have any one company "take responsibility" for every other
company's product and compatibility issues. Also, how big a box do you want
Microsoft to use to list all possible HW & SW products and their
compatibility on the box? <g>

If you had come here first and asked what you could do to make sure an
upgrade would work smoothly BEFORE you tried the upgrade, we could have
pointed you to the compatibility tool (a freebee from Microsoft) to test
your system and advised you to look for the latest drivers for each device
you owned before doing the upgrade.

Although there is an OEM version of XP on my computer, and
I've never had to reinstall, I'm told that a opportunity
to check hardware compatibility is offered when the install
process begins. I am also told that there are warnings in
the printed documentation in the box regarding hardware
and software compatibility issues. XP is better than ME
because it is fundamentally different. Not that there
aren't problems that should have been addressed by MS but
weren't, but if you had spent as much time doing a little
reading and paying attention as you have whining like a
little girl things would have gone much more smoothly for
you.
