Anyone out there know how to change the System Tray Icons from multiple rows of tiny Icons back to one row of readable ones? Happened when I reloaded XP after a HD failure. Seems like a really basic question but I've already spent waaay too much time on it.

1) Make sure Taskbar is unlocked (right-click on Taskbar,
Unlock . . .)
2) Grab the top-edge of the Taskbar and drag it downward
and release it . . . OR . . .
3) Grab the Toolbar separator (looks like either a series
of dots in a V shape, or a vertical line) at the lower-
right and drag it to the upper-left (of the Taskbar) and
release it.

Good Luck !

Did all that already. Taskbar at the first detent and unlocked. What has been disabled somehow is the ability to slide it and make it wider for all the icons to fit on one row. Any ideas anyone??

Hi, Mo.

Have you Right-clicked on the clock and then clicked Customize
notifications... and then the Taskbar tab? At the bottom of this screen,
click Customize... near Hide inactive icons. Then play around with settings
in this area until you get what you want. You can choose for each icon
whether to Always show, Always hide or Hide when inactive.

Most of us still call this area near the clock the SysTray, but now it is
officially the Notification Area. It automatically resizes itself
continually to make just enough room for all the icons that it needs to
show. It also has the left-pointing arrow to show them all, even the
currently-hidden ones.

The only time I've seen more than one row of icons here is when I've
expanded the Taskbar to multiple lines. When I expand my Taskbar to two
lines, these icons become 3 lines. Perhaps it depends at least partly on
your screen resolution, as set in Display Properties. (I use 1024x768.)

The size of the caption buttons is the size of the icons. Set CB to 2 px and you get two rows of tiny icons.
