Windows XP Pro running slow

I have a Dell Dimension 3100/E310 with Win XP Pro and Service Pack 2
installed and up to about 3 months ago, my computer started to act weird.
Whenever I tried to open one of my desktop icons such as Internet Explorer,
it would take about 15-30 seconds to open and when it finally does, it would
then freeze up or stop responding then I would have to wait again. Also,
when I try to close the window, it would scroll downwards before finally
closing.

A long time ago, someone had mentioned that I could fix this through the
Task Manager by deleting some files that was under the Processes Tab but
don't remember which ones I could delete and which ones I couldn't.

Anyone with suggestions or walk through to fix this would be greatly
appreciated.
 
Have you tried running some spyware and anti virus software. Can recommend
Ad-Aware 2007 and AVG both available on www.download.com and both are free.
Also I find that there has to be at least 512 DDR memory installed to prevent
severe slow down.

Go through these Cleaning steps:
1... First, try to clean up your caches, Internet files and delete cookies
by doing this:
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Tabs:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced
Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.
Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.
Then click on Programs Tab and click Manage Add-Ons and Disable all non
Verified Add-Ons (You should Renable them later one-by-one and see the
culprit and update it or remove it.

After the scan run disk cleanup on your drive, make sure to check all the
check boxes to clean the temp on the HDD and check disk then difrag in safe
mode.
Download this tool and clean up the left crap, please read the help file on
how to use, as it can be a pain if used in the wrong direction!.
