Is there any reason why, after about an hour or so, Windows XP
Professional would no longer see a CD/DVD-ROM drive? It doesn't even
appear the the device manager listing.

It certainly did the trick for me. I lost my drive after doing a registry repair with XP Repair Pro 4 and Doug's utility restored it.

Many thanks.

Actual lesson: Don't use tools you don't understand. If you wouldn't mess
with something on a one-by-one entry basis without a given tool - what makes
you think it's okay to trust a tool that does it all for you automagically?
