Windows XP Pro keeping locking up

I am having a problem with Windows XP professional locking
up all the time. This problem is intermittant and it
doesn't seem to matter what I am doing when it happens.
Everything just stops working and I have to do a power off
to correct it. The system comes back up and works fine
for awhile and then it happens again.

The system is a new Enpower Laptop with a Mobile AMD
Athlon XP 1900+ Processor running at 1.67 gigahertz, 30
GIG Hard Drive and 256 MB RAM. I have run virus scanners
and no viruses are found. Why does windows lock up all
the time and how do I fix it. this is getting annoying.
