Windows XP Pro installation failed

Got my wife an OEM XP Pro. CD the other day. (Bastard
offspring of Microsoft. You know; they fathered it, but
won't support it).

After installing the files and during the setup she got a
message that setup was unable to continue because some
component needed for the installation was missing. The
next screen then announced that "Installation failed",
something about "E:\i386\ASMS Parameter incorrect".

Researching "daddy's" "Knowledge Base" we found a
recommendation to copy all of i386\ from the CD to C:\ and
run the installation from there with DOS using winnt and
smartdrv.

However, in copying i386\ we found two files on the XP CD
that we were not able to copy with any CD reader in the
house, (as well as my computers at work).

XP CD\i386\asms\6000\\\controls\controls. (cat file) and
XP CD\i386\asms\6000\\\controls\controls. (man file)

Actually, to be honest, there is one old decrepit DVD drive
that only works occasionally in one old broken down
computer, which was able to copy the files from the CD to a
hard drive. But that computer is so old I can't get it to
read or write to a floppy, so I can't transfer the files
off of that machine. It has a CD burner, but when I burn
those two files onto a CD they're still unreadable by all
the other CD drives in the house.

I thought the disk might be illegal, but Microsoft says the
license is good; just an illigitimate child.

Are these two files supposed to cause problems like this?
Is it just a bad spot in the disk? If it's just a bad
disk, where can I get some relacement files that might
work?

Got any recommendations on installing XP with DOS?

The error messages you are seeing are often the result
of a bad CD. Contact the seller of the CD for a replacement.
Microsoft does not support OEM versions of Windows XP,
nor can they replace defective OEM CDs. They can only
replace defective "retail versions" of Windows XP.

P.S. Your sarcasm is very immature and childish.

It might be possible to install from that cd from within a Windows interface
even if a DOS install fails. Assuming you have Windows 9x/Me CD, do a
skeleton install of it first, then do an upgrade from your XP CD.

OEM versions cannot perform upgrades!
Clean install only and the CD must be a
good one!
