Windows XP Pro Freezes at boot up

Hello,

About a year ago I bought an HP laptop with Windows XP Home installed. It
worked great... for a while then started to act a bit flaky (icons would
dissappear etc.) Finally it froze on boot. I have only one account on the
machine so i used to get a s far as the blue "Windows XP" screen and then the
machine would just sit there though the HDD seemed to be doing something. I
regularly left it to sit for half an hour or so.

In the end I reinstalled the original XP the XP pro upgrade and all the
various bits of software I had. It all worked great... for a while an dthe
same started to happen again. Again I reinstalled everything.

Yesterday, it all started to go flaky again. Searching the web i found an
article that suggested the BITS Service might be causing the problem. The
solution it suggested was to "open the control centre and disable BITS
through the service console" DUH. I cannot get in the machine !!! thats the
problem!!.

Has anybody else had this problem and if so how did you soleve it a third
re-install of the OS oes not excite me.

My gut feeling sounds like a hardware problem.... but..........

Have you tried going into safe mode and changing the BITS setting. If that
doesn't work then I suggest you take the notebook back to where you
purchased it and make a warranty claim. Tell them that you've reimaged the
machine twice and the problem reoccurs..
