Windows XP Pro-Desktop Problem

This is pretty elementry but its got me.!! On my desktop
on the entire left side I have something like a taskbar
that I can't seem to get rid of, it consumes about 2.5
iches and the whole length of my screen. It contains a
FOLDER TASK With the options of "rename this folder"
and "delete this folder" the second is OTHER PLACES
Containing "my documents" "Shared Documents" and "my
network places" and finally DETAILS With "my computer"
in it.......??? how do I get rid of this?? I've checked
everything from display settings to desktop.. Help..
