I have been searching for help in setting up a simple
network between a windows 98 computer and my new xp pro
computer.

I am able to ping between the two, and I have managed to
see the 98 computer on the xp pro computer, but I can't
access files.

There seems to be a lot of mis-advice out there on what
exactly to do. Is there a step by step set of
instructions somewhere.

Hi Tony,

You're right - there is a lot of mis-advice out there, but
some good as well. The practicallynetworked site that
Shootist referred you to is a really great site, but even
it doesn't have all the answers. When I had difficulties
in getting my XP/98SE systems to see each other on the
LAN, the thing that finally worked for me was disabling
the Computer Browsing Service on one of the XP Pro boxes.
For whatever reason, when mixing 98SE and XP pro systems,
I've found that it works better when the 98SE system can
be the master browser. Anyway, give it a try to see if it
helps you at all.

Cheers
Derek
