Windows XP Pro and IE

I'm a long time Windows 9x user. I got used to spending a lot of time in the add/change software area of control panel. I'm used to having an IE entry that when I clicked on "remove" it gave me a choice of removing IE or repairing it. About a year ago I upgraded to a new machine with Win XP Pro and everything has worked so well since that I've never had a reason to go into this area.

Recently I've been having trouble accessing certain web sites and I thought that I would either repair my IE installation or remove it and then re-install. However, when I went into Change or Remove Programs the only IE entry that I found was "Internet Explorer Q824145". Of course it still showed up in Add/Remove Windows Components.

I removed the "Internet Explorer Q824145" entry and then cleared the check mark for Internet Explorer in the windows components list. Both times I got a status box showing that the software was being removed but I never ever got a repair option.

I reinstalled IE -- seemed to go pretty quick compared to my past [non XP] experiences -- and then went to the MS Windows Update site and applied the patch that showed up.

I still have the problem browsing certain sites but now I'm wondering if my system really completely removed IE and reinstalled it.

Under XP Pro, does IE not show up on the installed software list any more?

Check for a file named HOSTS with no extension (not Hosts.sam). It may be a
hidden file. Open it with Notepad and remove any line referencing the site.
Or, rename HOSTS to OLDHOSTS

Thanks for the reply Frank. I've already done that. This question was
poorly worded but I was really just wondering if what I am seeing when I
remove IE and install it is correct. Does IE not show up in the installed
software list in XP? Is there no longer a repair option for it in XP?

The only way that you could have that feature under XP would be
if you had previously installed IE6sp1 separately before installing XPsp1.

Here is the (IMO inferior) alternative that XP users have been given

<title>KB318378 - How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP</title>
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;318378

I'm wondering if my system really completely removed IE and reinstalled it.

Did that "component" that you were able to uninstall show a size of 0KB?
If so, all that would do is remove the ability to put the icon in the Desktop
or Start menu (perhaps to satisfy the DOJ.)

I gave a more detailed answer to a poster of a similar question
recently in ie6.setup NG. You should be able to find it using
a Google Groups search with:

No, it doesn't show up in the list, nor is there a repair option.

Thanks Robert. I looked it up and it answered my questions.

Thanks to Frank as well.
