windows xp pro activation period expired

I was away when my windows xp pro activation period expired, now it won't
load up, I have tried reinstalling it but it still won't work
can anyone help
i have read the area on the knowledge base that deals with activation in
general and it is no help

That doesn't sound right. Windows should boot up ok and offer you the
option of activating. It won't let you do much else, but it should let you
attempt to activate.

If you can provide more details, someone may be able to help troubleshoot
this problem (although this isn't really related to security administration,
the topic of this news group.)
 
I have the same problem on XP Pro. An error message stating "This copy of
Windows must be activated with Microsoft before you can log on. Do you want
to activate Windows now?"
Selecting either Yes or No has no effect other that bringing me back to the
Welcome screen and the user (Me) "Logging Off"
This is a legal, purchased Windows XP Pro and has been in use continuiously
for exectly two years.
What's happening?
I did reenstall XP in a new partition but of course it looks like a new
installation and all my sttings, links and software is not available from
this desktop.
Help!

Hey, I just tried to boot up an old machine of mine and got the same exact
error as ALB. If anyone has any clues on what to do, please let me know.
