Yesterday I installed some Windows updates (long list of security updates
plus maybe some other things). Immediately after rebooting I was using
Powerpoint, I clicked the mouse and Windows crashed with message "Windows
encountered a Page fault and is closing to protect your computer". After it
finished I rebooted and obtained the same result during Windows bootup. On
the third reboot I was able to Run System restore and move back to the
pre-updates status.
Now I suspect that I know the reason why this failed.
Until a month ago I was using XP Home edition but some software I installed
required 2000 or XP Professional so I upgraded to the latter. I suspect, but
I don't know for sure that some Updates were downloaded by XP Home but not
installed until yesterday. Perhaps these are incompatible with XP
Professional?
After restoring, XP wants to to reinstall the updates that caused the crash.
My questions are:
1. I don't want to re-install the updates unless I know they are suitable.
How can I purge the list of updates to install. I'm assuming that afterwards
I will connect to the updates site and get a new "relevant" list.
2. When you use system restore and pick a restore point (ie "Patch 1234"),
does XP restore to a point after this software was installed or prior. I've
assumed the former but it would be helpful to know.
3. Comments and suggestions please.
