To whom that can help,

I am running a small network of 4 pc's, running Win 98SE.
I am going to purchase another pc soon. Will Windows XP
Pro be able to communicate and share files thru my network
to the other systems running 98SE? I would like to have
the new XP system act as a server for connecting to the
net for all workstations. My primary system does this thru
internet connection sharing at this time. Any suggestions
and thoughts besides getting "Windows Server"?

Works fine -- all recent flavors of WinWhatever can work together
in a workgroup.

Also, XP -- like W98SE/WME -- includes ICS. So, if the only
server functions you need are sharing a connection to the 'net
and sharing files & printers, you are in business.

Note that XP caps the number of inbound connections to its
internal (file & printer) resources: XP HE only allows 5 PCs
to be concurrently connected, XP PRO only allows 10.

Finally, if you connect to the 'net via a DSL or cable modem, then
I suggest that you spend a few bucks more and get a router. Using
hardware routing instead of software routing (ICS) is more reliable;
see http://home.comcast.net/~bobwbsgs/homenet.txt for my reasons.
