I have a 10 gb maxtor HD set as master with windows xp pro loaded, and a
secondary master 80gb hitachi unformatted hd installed as well. BIOS detects
both HD without a problem, and in windows device manager it shows the HDs
too. The problem is when I open my computer it only shows the one master HD
and not the new unformatted one. how can i get windows to see both so i
utilize the other HD without swapping primary for secondary and reinstalling
windows on new HD?

Right click on "my computer" and go to "manage". Next go to "disk
management" and create a partition & format the new drive.

If your new harddrive came with a utilities disk, It may be faster and
easier to use it. I know that Maxtor recommends using their utility disk
versus the Windows disk management tool. The previous poster is correct- you
need to format (and partition, if desired) the disk for it to be recognized
correctly.

I'm having the same problem only my second disk is a Maxtor. It shows in the
bios but not in the disk management. It only sees the master harddrive.
When I run the utilities disk it tries to assign the maxtor a "C:"
designation then doesn't let me access it to give it another drive
designation. Disk management tools doesn't show it so I can't partition and
format there. Anything else I can do?
