I had a network that consisted of Windows 2000 and 98
machines. I had to create an account that matches the
rest of the usernames and passwords of other machines.
This was because of a password prompt and etc.

When networking with all machines running Windows XP, do
I need to create an account that matches the other
machines?

Yes, you can accomplish connecting to other XP computers this way. But I've
also discovered that if you try to connect to a hard drive on another XP
computer, a userid and password dialog box will pop up on the fly and allow
you to type in a userid and password known by the remote computer, without
necessarily logging in to your own computer that way. So it's easier than it
was with Win2000.

XP Home Edition never requires matching user accounts to access it.
By default, XP Professional doesn't either.

The only time you'll need to have matching user accounts is if you
disable simple file sharing on XP Professional.
