Hi. I have a laptop running Win ME, a laptop running Win
98 SE, an older desktop running Win ME and a new computer
running Win XP.
I set up each for networking by naming them all to the
same workgroup, then selecting "Obtain an IP Address
Automatically." All three of the non-XP computers
connect to the network fine and can share drives with
each other fine. But the XP machine just won't appear on
or connect to the network.
The confusing thing is that it DID work initially. For a
couple of days I had all four machines up and sharing on
the network fine. I really can't recall changing or
adding anything that would have stopped it from working,
unless one of the many recent security patches changed
something.
The other odd thing now is that I cannot enter a computer
description. When I go to My
Computer>Properties>Computer Name, I can change the Full
Computer Name and the Workgroup, but I can't edit the top
field for the Computer Description. It is blank and it
won't let me type anything in.
My TCP/IP is still set to "Obtain an IP Address
Automatically" and my workgroup is still the same as the
other computers. Every device reads as "this device is
working properly" in the device manager.
I've also tried switching around ethernet cables and hub
ports on the hub, and no matter what combination of
ports/cables I reach the same result (the other three
systems communicating fine, the XP a no-show).
I'm not having any other problems with my Win XP
machine. Everything else seems super stable and smooth
(including internet access via dial-up).
My motherboard is the Intel BZ875P with the integrated GB
ethernet.
Is it possible that a disabled service is causing the
problem? I can't find anything suspicious through the
Administrative Tools, but perhaps I'm not looking for the
right service.
Thank you for any suggestions.
