I have several machines set up in our house all running
Windows XP, one with XP Professional. The machines are
connected using the Linksys Router with two being wireless
and the others using Cat5.
I have added another machine to the network. The newly
added machine cannot see the network neighborhood. It can
get to the internet fine and I can ping all the machines
on the network but it tells me that I do not have
permission to access the network. The others work fine.
I have checked the workgroup names several times, have
also checked to make sure that each computer has a unique
name, still no luck.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

I am experiencing the exact same problem. Even using
linksys. Here is the
error message that I am seeing

\\computer b is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions.

The network path was not found

The funny thing is that both computers are visible on the
network from both stations. I can access computer A from
Computer B but get the error message above when I try to
access computer b from computer a.

Any help on this would be appreciated. emails welcome

These tips should help solve the problem:

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/ic_firewall.htm

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)

I'm having a somewhat related problem. Just upgraded from
98 to XP. With 98, had no problem with Linksys router
connected to broadband.

With XP, have had nothing but intermittent problems with
broadband connection going on and off. I've even taken
Linksys out of loop, connecting cable modem directly to
PC, both with Ethernet and with USB. No connection. I
hear tell XP does have problems with broadband
connections -- is that your understanding?

After 8 hours of trying to fix this same issue on a new NW we have with an
XP Home machine and a W98 machine - I though this Netbios tip was the
answer - it was not enabled on the XP Home machine but was on the W98
machine.

Sadly we still get the same problem. the XP machine is able to access files
and printer on the W98 machine but the W98 one cannot access the files or
printer on the XP Home machine.

I have checked everything listed on various posts, from firewall to
workgroup names to the whole lot. But I'm obviously missing the one thing
that is preventing it working.

Apart from swapping the machines over (and the users who will scream) is
there anyone else who has fixed this? Looking around the groups it seems
that the "\\computer b is not accessible. You might not have permission to
use this network resource" problem is pretty widespread.

Thanks for any further tips.
Rgds
Mike
