Dan Gochenour

I am administering a group of windows xp computers for a
small company and about 4 of the xp machines seem to be
mapping to network drives in reverse alphabetical order
without the users of the machines doing it.
As of this morning one machine had 13 mappings
to "\\Main\Server"

Anyone seen this or have a clue why it is happening.
Couldn't find the answer in the knowledge base.

Thanks, Dan

Check to see if you are running any scripts or batch files that are mapping
these drives. As a precautionary measure also do a virus scan on the
computers.

Pavan, thank you.
I ran a search on one of the machines already yesterday
for both .vbs and .js files and didn't see any that had
been changed recently.
All computers are protected by Symantec Corporate and
unless a script comes down via email it usually passes by
them if they are systems files(don't really want to
quarantine Microsoft files do we).
From the logons currently I have no users as roaming
profiles from the Win 2000 Server since we still have
some 98 machines on the network so I am not assigning
drives from the user scripts.
Thanks for your help though. Any other thoughts anyone?
Dan.

Any idea of the time frame that it is doing this in? If
there are no users actively using the system will it still
map drives?

If the users are logged into the system when it is doing
it, and it is not when they leave it alone I would check
the programs that the users are running (batch files, etc.
will occasionally map drives). Another thing to check
would be any services/programs running in the background.
Systematically kill all processes that you don't need (for
testing I would include norton at least once) and see if
the behaviour continues. Try to isolate whether it is
windows or a program that is doing it.
