I did a normal reboot of my system last night - this morning and found that
it logs me off immediately after logging on. This happens in safe mode and in
normal boot.

I have tried this solution, only to find that it goes into a loop of loggin
in, logging off

http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/lofiversion/index.php/t7624.html

I have no idea what caused this to happen. I have up todate Norton and also
use spybot search and destroy.

ALSO - I tried this fix but it restore console says command not recognized.

(in windows\system32 dir)
COPY USERINIT.EXE WSAUPDATER.EXE

Anyone have a suggestion?

Your problem is most likely caused by Windows being unable to locate
userinit.exe, perhaps because the file has been renamed or because the
registry points at the wrong location. You could try and restore the file
like so:
1. Boot into the Recovery Console.
2. Type this command VERBATIM!
copy \Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\userinit.exe \Windows\System32
3. Press the Enter key.

If this does not work then you would have to perform a manual System
Restore - see here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545. This is a fairly
complex process and past experience says that only people with a strong
background in Windows maintenance can perform it successfully. For those
lacking this background a complete re-installation of Windows is much more
effective. After re-installing Windows, you must restore your data files
(including your EMail files) from your most recent backup.

I copied the file from the dllcache to the system32 directory

I was able to logon and am backing my files up now. I was able to change
users over to my old admin account. Programs etc all look like they are
there, but have lost all file associations etc.

curious why this would happen, since the system in quesition has been 100%
error free for over 2 years (HP7160n)

I am assuming the there is no way of restoring?

You are probably the victim of some malware. By the way, I recommend that
you review your backup philosophy. Backing up important files after the
horse has bolted is dangerous. Next time you might lose the whole lot. We
often get to read the resulting sob-stories in this newsgroup.
