Windows XP Internet Sharing

I am trying to network a PC and laptop together with Windows XP Pro. My PC
has the internet connection using 2 NICs one for the net and one for my home
network. I can share folders and ping each machine from the other, so I
have a connection. I can access the net from my PC, but not from the laptop,
which I would like to be able to do.

I have tried the "Set up a home or small office network" selection, but it
does not work (gives me an error saying I must set it up manually). I have
manually set up my home network NIC on the main box for IP 192.168.0.1, and
the NIC on the laptop for 192.168.0.3. The external NIC has it's own IP,
Gateway, and DNS (all automatic from my ISP).

What I need to know is this:

1. What should I put on the laptop NICs Default Gateway IP? I tried both
192.168.0.1 and the Internet NICs IP, and neither one works.

2. Same question on the 2nd NIC on the PC...what IP should the gateway have
on it?

3. Do the DNSs need to be filled out on the laptop and second NIC?

4. Any other info I might be missing...

Configure the PC's Internet connection as specified by your ISP, and
enable Internet Connection sharing on it:

1. Open the Network Connections folder.
2. Right click the Internet connection.
3. Click Properties.
4. Click Advanced.
5. Put a check mark in the Internet Connection Sharing box.

Don't set up the PC's 2nd NIC manually. ICS will automatically make
the correct settings on it. It shouldn't have a default gateway or
DNS server specified.

Configure the laptop's NIC in one of these ways:

1. Obtain an IP address automatically. The PC will give it the
correct settings using DHCP.

or:

2. Manually, with theses settings:

IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1 or your ISP's DNS server

Thanks for the info there...unfortunately it still doesn't work. The IP
auto assigned to my 2nd NIC for some reason is not 192.168.0.1...

Basically I followed all of the directions at

What is the IP address of the 2nd NIC?

If it says that it's automatically assigned (169.254.x.x), something's
wrong with the ICS setup. It should show a manually assigned address
of 192.168.0.1. That means manually assigned by the system, not by
you. Try disabling ICS on the Internet connection and re-enabling it.

Are there any Event Log error messages about ICS? To see, click Start
| Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance | Administrative Tools |

errors like this):

"The DHCP allocator has disabled itself on IP address 169.254.97.214, since
the IP address is outside the 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0 scope from which
addresses are being allocated to DHCP clients. To enable the DHCP allocator
on this IP address, please change the scope to include the IP address, or
change the IP address to fall within the scope."

Is there something I need to do with the DHCP server (though I haven't
touched it before...). I tried unchecking and then rechecking the ICS on my
1st NIC, and it still doesn't work. I also don't get the message that the
support doc shows after checking the box for ICS (Step 10 of the 1st
section).

Thanks for checking the Event Log, JD. Something is definitely wrong
with the ICS setup. I'm not sure what it is or how to fix it.

Here's a possible solution:

1. Make a system restore point so that you can un-do anything bad that
happens in the following steps.

2. Disable ICS on the Internet connection.

3. Go to Device Manager and un-install the 2nd NIC.

4. Click Action | "Scan for hardware changes" to make XP re-install
the 2nd NIC.

5. Go to Network Connections and make sure that the connection for the
2nd NIC is enabled and that it isn't firewalled or bridged.

6. Enable ICS on the Internet connection.
