I have a one year old Dell Dimension 4550 running Windows
XP home Edition and every time I connect to the net I
have to enable my firewall and disable Netbios
overTCP/IP.I've upgraded my Bios to version 8,done a
clean reinstall of XP and still have the problem.Dell
says it's software related but that's where they stop. The
system is as shipped but the problem only started about a
month ago. What gives?Any ideas I'm open to try anything.

unless you want to share your computer with the world then for security sake
you should disable netbios over tcp/ip anyway.

On my system, I went into the properties for the internet connection (in
Network Connections). Selected TCP/IP, clicked the Properties button>
General> Advanced and removed NetBIOS from the bindings. I left it in place
in the properties for the LAN connection as it is needed there.
