Windows XP installation problems

I reformatted my hard drive because Windows XP Home was running slow. I had recently installed a 512mb ram chip so I was annoyed. After the reformat I attempted to reinstall windows and I got serveral stop errors. I got a multitude of errors concerning the inablitiy of the setup program to put files onto my hard drive. I assumed this was a hard disk error so I bought a new hard drive. It is still giving me the same errors. During the pre-setup where the program copies the setup files to my computer I get errors saying it is unable to copy them. I also have 2 cds of Windows XP and they both stop at similar percentages. Has anyone else had this error? I would really appreciate some help.

Same problem here. Neither suggestion worked for me. Mine hangs up with the following written into the log:
Error:
SXS.DLL: Syntax error in manifest or policy file "D:\I386\ASMS\1000\MSFT\WINDOWS\GDIPLUS\GDIPLUS.MAN" on line 4.
Error: Installation failed: D:\I386\ASMS. Error message: Incorrect function.
Fatal error:
One of the components that windows needs to continue setup could not be installed.
Incorrect function.

I have two XP disks and neither will work. Same copy of XP has been loaded on machine with same hard drive with same components.

It seems the WinXP files are being corrupted. May be bad CD-ROM or IDE
cable. I had to replace a CD-ROM that would give occasional errors when
installing programs off CD. Is IDE cable 40 wire or 80 wire? is CD ROM on
the last connector or cable? You may be able to boot off Win98 or
httP://bootdisk.com floppy and copy CD"s i386 directory to harddrive. Then
boot off WinXP setup floppies from microsoft.com and install from harddrive.

I'll try the install disks. And to the other person who has the same problem, could you e-mail me if you find a solution? I am going to clean my machine on the inside so I'm sure it's not overheating; then I'm going to do the bootdisks. If it works I'll post it up here.
