Hi,

I am having a hard time installing Win XP on my computer.

It boots from CD and after I choose the selection, the system hangs at
"Press any key to boot from CD" screen.

The system is
ASUS CUSI-M motherboard
Celeron 1.1GHz
80G Seagate Barracuda
40x Acer CD ROM

Thought it might be HDD problem and downloaded discwizard from seagate
website but no success.
So I installed HDD on another system with Pentium 233MHz. The installation
worked fine.

Does anyone have any idea? Thanks in advance!

Have you tried connecting a different cd player?

Your system lacks
- cooling
- RAM
- display adapter
all of which could produce installations probs...

It may seem silly, but have you got two CDrom type devices?
If you have, you may have to use the other or even unplug one, I had
this problem with a mates.

Hahaha, Microsoft would certainly object to installing one copy of Windows
to two computers! They would consider as piracy of their software.

Thanks everyone for the input.
To give more information:
M/B got latest BIOS version installed.
Memory is 256MB
Yes, the systerm got 2 optical drives 40x Acer CD ROM and DVD drive.
I also suspected that so I tried installing with both of them. The problem
still exits. So I unplugged CD ROM and tried with DVD and vice versa but
still no success. It's kind of weird.

As one of you suggested, I tried with different CD ROM drive 24x, still it
won't install.
I can't think of anymore what might be the problem. Please help!

thanks,
MLK

If the error were DURING the install, I would suggest checking the
memory. Still, it's quick and easy to check it anyway.

http://www.simmtester.com

Download their DocMemory program (it's free) and let it run a few
passes. That should rule out a memory problem.

Try a different video card if you have one. A flaky video card can
simulate the failure of just about any other component in the system.

Try different IDE cables on both your CD-ROM drive and your hard
drive. Double and TRIPLE check the jumper settings on your IDE
devices.

To give more information:

No more information on what you have..
More information on:

I don't think autostart and "boot" are the same thing..
Neither is run setup, from a file on the CD..
and after I choose the selection,
the system hangs at "Press any key to boot from CD" screen.

Is it "hung" or just busy, doin it's thing?
Takes a Looooong time to snoop your whole system..

FYI - When I try to do it.. the only HD will be my C: drive.

Had a similar problem recently when reinstalling win98. I solved it by
turning the virus protection (obviously preventing any writes to the boot
sector). Enter setup when you start the computer and check that you have not
got anything to prevent writes to the boot sector ( press the keys suggested
at startup to enter setup)

Thats virus protection off

Hi MLK!

May we safely assume that you partitioned and formatted the hard drive
Before trying to install WIN XP?

Would be no need to worry until after 30 days when XP requires activation to
continue in use.

Hi,

I am having a hard time installing Win XP on my computer.

Same here.

I slipstreamed XP with SP-2, and Setup hangs at the first screen. I've tried
other drives to no avail.

Are you running a Prescott CPU on an Intel i875/i875 chipset. If so which
motherboard.

You could always copy the files to the harddrive first (either using a
FAT32 partition for your install and convert it to NTFS later, or have a
separate partition just for the install files) and run winnt that way. Be
sure to boot with a disk that has smartdrv enabled.

If you made your own cd, it may be a bad burn. I've made some
unattended cds with sp2. When burned at the highest speed, they had
read errors. When I dropped the speed down a couple of notches, they
worked fine.

Was system configured *exactly* the same for the last WinXP
install?

Often on a new build, a failure at that point could be memory
related... I always run http://www.memtest86.com for as long as
possible before installing the OS on a box.
