When things go wrong with windows xp (file go missing
etc). I have noticed that a lot of the repair programs
and procedures. Say put the windows CD in the drive and
such and such a program will call up new files or perform
some repair from the disk. I do not have a Windows xp cd.
Just a recovery disc. Can the recovery disc be used in
the same way to replace some files called up by a repair
program scannow etc. Or can the recovery disc only be
used to replace the whole system or major parts of it. If
so is it possible to get A windows xp home edition cd. OR
go somewhere on the internet that could analise the
system and do the same job as windows cd. I would just
like to know for future reference. Thanks Ray

Ray,

Does your recovery disk have the ability to write the files to your
hard disk? That is, will it put all the needed support files there?
The OEM disk came with that capability. I used it, and then moved all
the created files to CD-ROM. That became my WIN disk. Worked fine,
though sometimes I had to help the calling program find the
appropriate directory. FWIW.

Hi Ray,

You can check with the system vendor for the needed disk, they will often
supply one for a small additional fee.

In the meantime, check your system for an \I386 folder (usually under
C:\Windows), if this exists, then you can point to this folder when prompted
to insert the CD.

Most System Restore disks will not work in this way, that is why most copy
the I386 folder to the hard drive for your use.

.
Thanks for your reply. I cannot find the I386 folder in
this computer. I shall contact the vendor to see if i can
get a window CD. I am still unfamiliar with computer
language. What is meant by POINT to a certain folder.
Thanks Ray

Thanks for your reply.Dont know if it can write support
files to the disc. Is there any way to find out. can you
define what are the support files. i do have a cd rom
drive so i coud make a disk to. but would need to be
carefull Ray

Hi Ray,

To point means to redirect the search from the WinXP CD to a local folder.
Make sure you have folder options/view tab set to see hidden and system
files before you look for the I386 folder.
