Using CD to istall windows xp I get to the point to
delete existing 98 partition. It comes back as
unpartition now and to enter to install XP. hit enter and
system appears to do nothing. finally comes back with
fat32 partition and can not continue. tried several times
with same results. any ideas?

It occurs to me that you are deleteing the old partition and then trying to
install XP (on no partition)
You need to create a new partition (ntfs or fat32) before you can install XP

Alternately, the partition may be corrupted, thus, useing a W98 boot-floppy,
see if you are able to do fdisk/format of the drive from thiere.

By the way you aren't trying to run the setup from within the old
installation are you?
