Windows XP: How to share a single folder?

All,

I have sucessfully configured my Windows XP box to use remote desktop
connection. However, I would like to simply share a single folder for
remote access (if I wanted to access just the files in a folder rather
than remote connecting). i.e. start=>run=>"my.ip.address\sharedFolder"

I have done this before in Windows NT and 2000 (simply right click and
share). But when I do the above, it doesn't work. Any suggestions?

Sincerely,
Justin R. Gortner

Are you running a domain or workgroup?

If domain, are both computers in the same domain? Or if different
domains, is there a trust between the two?

If workgroup, are both computers in the same workgroup? With
identical account / password defined on both?

I am on a workgroup. The other computer is not on the same workgroup.
But you didn't need this in windows 2000. You could connect to the
folder from any computer. So I still dont know how.

Justin,

Is the resource computer using Simple File Sharing?

Simple File Sharing (an option in XP Professional) lets you share
files like XP Home, which is similar to 9x / ME.

To access a share in Windows XP, without Simple File Sharing, you have
to be authenticated. Authentication in a workgroup requires an
account / password on the resource computer identical to the account /
password logged onto on the sharing computer.
