I have 23 windows xp hotfix programs on my computer all
ending in different numbers. I don't know how they got
there or what they're for. Please enlighten me. Can they
be removed without adversly affecting my computer's
performance?

"Hotfixes" are the updates you installed from the Windows Update
website. Do not be tempted to remove them or you will uninstall
the actual updates.

If you wish to safely remove the "uninstall files" for the
Hotfixes (i.e. $NtUninstallQxxxxxx$ files shown in Windows Explorer)
and cleanup your Add/Remove Programs list, visit MS-MVP Doug Knox's
excellent website for instructions.

These are the security (and other) updates to Windows XP that
you've been
installing all along.

Remove them at your peril! Doing so will re-expose to you to all
the security issues that they were designed to correct.

Hi,

The hotfixes in the Control Panel are a method of uninstalling incompatible
updates. Do not uninstall them unless you are having problems with a
particular update.

If you set folder options/view tab to see hidden and operating system files,
you will find corresponding $NtUninstallQxxxxxx$ folders in the \Windows
folder for each update. They hold the uninstall information for each hotfix.
If you are not going to uninstall any particular update, you can safely
delete the uninstall folder. Then go to Add & Remove and select the hotfix
for removal. You will get an error message followed by an offer to remove
the hotfix from the listings. It is not necessary to do this, I mention it
only as an option. I usually leave each hotfix alone for at least a month.

MVP Doug Knox has developed an easy method to automate this series of steps.
See WinXP Utilities on www.dougknox.comb "Remove hotfix backup files".

From personal experience, it can be risky. I ended up
wiping out some very important stuff. My suggestion is if
you're going to delete stuff make sure you know what it is
and/or does.
