.
Robert,

I have 2 computers with XP Home and 2000 Pro and I had
a similar issue. I could connect to the XP machine but
couldn't connect to the 2000 from the XP. I went to
computer management, enabled guest and suddenly I could
connect. I disabled guest and I can still access both
computers from each other.
I would create a workgroup on the XP pc and then I
would add a network place on the 2000 pc and hopefully you
can see the XP's shared folders. Hope this helps!

I could connect to the XP machine but
couldn't connect to the 2000 from the XP.

My problem is in reverse. I can access a computer with W2k Pro installed
with a computer that has XP home installed, but I just can't seem to be able
to access the XP home with the W2k Pro computer.

-Both computers belong to the same group.
-Both computers have their own unique name.
-I've disabled the firewall programs in both computers long enough to see
that firewall programs shouldn't be the problem.
-I've disabled the extra firewall that XP home has.
-I've enabled shared folders in the XP home.
-The W2k computer can see the XP's name, but not the shared files or folders
under the XP's name.
-I can ping both ways.
-The W2k will ask for a username and password when accessing from the XP
home.
-The XP home will not ask for a username and password, so that the W2k can
access the XP.

The last item is my problem. How do I make the computer with XP Home ask for
the username or password, so that the W2k computer can log on?

Windows XP Home cannot join a domain. Only XP Pro can
join a domain.
You CAN sign onto a domain with Windows Home Edition.
Here's how:

in the username/log on name box type

Domainname\username

Where Domainname is the name of the domain you want to
log onto, and username your log on name. Be sure to use a
backward slash. Then enter your password and press Enter.

Hope this helps!
