Windows XP Home Networking Problem

Hi I'm running Windows XP Home on my desktop and laptop.
I'm trying to set up a home network using a Linksys
router. The desktop is connected to the router with an
ethernet cable and the laptop is connected wirelessly.
This is my first attempt at setting up a home network, so
please excuse my ignorance.

I've set up the workgroup and to the best of my knowledge
both of the pcs belong to this workgroup, however, on my
desktop when I try to "View workgroup computers" I
receive an error that states "(name of workgroup) is not
accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this
server to find out if you have access permissions. The
list of servers to this workgroup is not currently
available."

On my laptop when I "View workgroup computers" I don't
get the same error and I'm able to see my laptop, but not
my desktop.

Do you have any suggestions on how I might go about
remedying this problem? If you have a link to step by
step directions on how to appropriately set up a home
network with Windows XP Home, I would greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Greetings JC

Ensure that all firewalls are disabled or removed while troubleshooting. Make sure the XP's firewall is disabled. It is only intended for direct connections to the Internet and must be disabled on local area networks. If you are running any third party firewalls, it's probably misconfigured and blocking access to the machine.

Eric,

Thanks for this. This also solved the same problem that I
was having.

I am having the exact same problem as JC and I have no firewall
issues; they are all disabled. Could something else cause this
problem?

TIA.

Greetings Xerxes,

If you're running any third party firewalls completely remove them while troubleshooting. Sometimes disabling doesn't always work. Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on all machines, and make sure they all have the same subnet mask, same workgroup names and unique computer names. If you are still having problems, visit practicallynetworked's troubleshooting section.
