was able to play "shrek" dvd in the car for my kid and now
the sound skips and sounds like it slows down in some
parts. Tried other videos, the same thing. Brought it
inside and still the same. Have gone to device drivers
and checked for signifier I have a sony vaio laptop.
Maybe not Windows? Also Windowsxp automatically shutsdown
after about ten minutes of being online??? Any answers
would be greatly appreciated.

tracking dvd playback issues is bnever easy. I had a problem with running dvds on battery, but when it was plugged into the mains it was fine. It turned out it was to do with the speed step. when on battery power the laptop will try to save as much power as possible and will slow down the processor to do so. I managed to find a tool for my dell inspiron where i could manually set the processor speed. don't know if one exists for the sony though. I know microsoft released a patch for speed step so my first advice would be to visit auto update and search for it.

Your second problem is due to a virus, the blaster worm virus. It has been pretty well documented, i'm suprised anybody still has it. There is a patch on the microsoft site that will prevent it from closing your computer down. You really should get yourself a virus checker though, and a firewall wouldn't go amiss either.
