Can someone tell me or direct me to a site that shows what files are
safe to remove from the startup, My P4 is running quite a bit slower,
there appears to be to many programs starting when I first fire the
computer up.... Thanks,
TB

XP's start services shouldn't be the source of this type of issue.

First, be sure your antivirus software has the latest definitions and run a
virus scan.

Second, download, install and run Ad Aware:
www.lavasoftusa.com

If you are clear, visit www.blackviper.com for some excellent information on
services that start on bootup in XP and what's needed and what can be turned
off.

Except I don't think the op is talking about XP services.

Michael's solution will work however if the programs you have loading are
spyware or adware programs. Otherwise take a look at your Startup foldr and
see what programs are there.
There is no list of what should be running it's a matter of what you've
installed, unless of course I'm reading your post wrong and it really is
services your talking about.

Also look at the Notification area and see what icons are there, in a lot of
cases you can right click and select properties so the program won't load at
startup.

This might help. If your computer is not networked, you can disable
or put to automatic everything this page tells you to. I think I left
one on automatic because I didn't like his line of reasoning. It will
save you some memory, but I don't know if it will help with speed.

Right now I am trying to figure out what weird programs are loading in
msconfig\startup. I still have about 350 Megabytes loading at
startup. I hope I am answered in another thread.
