Hi, just upgraded my computer to a custom-built
configuration with the following:
Asus m/b, AMD Athlon XP 2400+, 120GB HDD, 512 MB DDR,
Xtasy 9200 128MB DDR Video csrd from Visiontek, CD-R, CD-
RW and upgraded from W2000 to WXP Home already updated
via MS website.
Case in point is that IE 6.0 always crashes, sometimes
the machine reboots, sometimes when idle I attempt to
sign-up and freezes loading personal settings, and many
other errors as not booting, in short a nightmare.

I would like to start a thread to see if I can get along
with this new OS or do I go back to my old and reliable
W2000. So please if there are any suggestions please help
me.

We had a similar problem on a 6 month old HP PC and did a "system restore."
Problem solved. Sometimes you get help on these NGs and sometimes you
don't.

Back up all your files before you do this. Good luck.

what do you mean by this comment? hope you don't mean
that the help should come in seconds after posting
question. please give some of the mvp's a chance to read
the message and compose a suggestion. maybe 24 hours is
good guideline for good response? your response is
probably fantastic and mvp's might agree.

Jose;
Maybe you have a bad installation of windows XP.
However my guess is a hardware issue.
Make sure all fans are functional and not obstructed.
Use the latest Windows XP drivers for all hardware.
Check and reseat all card and cable connections (internal & external)
Verify all hardware and software is compatible with Windows XP:

#3 Upgrade Advisor is particularly useful.

** Not at all. :-) I lurk here to learn more about WXP-Home. Sometimes
people are directed to a MS website that is so technical as to be useless to
a beginner.
Right I myself need the answer as to where the FIX is for Spybot as it
doesn't do anything but "flash" briefly across the monitor when I try to run
it. It runs fine on our W98SE machines.

Greetings --

Well, since it's not technically possible to upgrade from Win2K
Pro to WinXP Home, it's awfully hard to say what's going on.

In general, both WinXP Home and WinXP Pro have proven to be more
stable than Win2K, unless there's something wrong with the underlying
hardware. Without any specific error messages or better descriptions
of your symptoms, there's little I can suggest, at this time.

Mine was a fresh XP installation, upgrade from W2000 to
XP is just a way of reducing typing. I tend to agree with
you guys that this seems to be a hardware problem. I will
check so.

Thanks, Jose

Will check HW drivers.

Thanks

Spyware/adware can cause this.
See
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each need to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded.

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.
