Windows XP Home Edition locks up...

Recently I was using Windows ME without any problems. My Hard drive crashed and my computer tech installed a new hard drive and recommended switching to Windows XP so I would no longer get the "blue screen of death." Since bringing the computer home, my computer boots up without incident. However, the computer locks up completely anywhere from 1 minute to 20 minutes after start up. There is no error message at all. The system simply locks up and not even control-alt-del does anything. My tech said that he thought it was more than likely my HP Photosmart 1115 Printer's software or my palm pilot software creating an internal confllict. I have since uninstalled the software for both and disconnected the hardware. Even doing this, the problem persists. Has anybody experienced this??? So far, I'm inclined to believe that I paid $200 for a peice of crap operating system. Any assistance that can be offered would be greatly appreciated.

Lockups can be caused by overheating. Make sure your system is running
at Ok temps and all your fans are working.
You can use Motherboard Monitor to keep an eye on temps and Power
Supply Voltages. Download it here

I am having a similar problem. I upgraded from Win98, now
my machine locks up the exact same way as described
below, except I usually get at least 20 minutes of use in
before it completely locks up.

Before your "tech" installed Windows XP, did (s)he check all your hardware
and software to see if it was compatible with Windows XP? Also: If your
computer is old enough to have shipped with ME, you may not have sufficient
computing power (CPU, RAM, video) to run XP successfully.

For my machine, I know the CPU and RAM is fine - 900mhz,
and just added 256 RAM. Video I don't know much about. I
noticed there are numerous posts on this topic, so it's a
common problem. How did others solve this?

Thanks

Matt
