Michael Dedman

Hi all.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

My client has a Samsung laptop running Windows XP Home. He has a slight
hardware conflict problem with it (basically he couldn't dial out because
the Comm port was 'aparently' already in use), and so earlier I attempted to
fix the problem.

Using Starter, I disabled everything that started automatically on his
laptop, in order to try and work out what was conflicting with the Comm
port. However, after rebooting, when you get prompted with the log-in box
and click on OK, Windows looks like it is going to boot up, but then
automatically logs-off, and leaves you back at the log-in dialogue box. I
cannot log on as Guest as this account is disabled, and there are no more
accounts set up on this laptop.

I get the same problem if I try to boot up in Safe Mode, and I have even
tried running the repair option on the Win XP Home CD but to no avail. If I
boot up with a system disk, I can see all of the data in DOS, but I can't
boot into Windows for love nor money. Any suggestions?

Thx,
Michael Dedman.

Michael,

Is this a built-in modem, PCMCIA modem or externally connected modem?

If it is a built-in, you'll need to check the BIOS to ensure that it is
enabled. I recall a client who had Fujitsu laptops that are designed to ONLY
use EITHER the internal modem or the external COM Port, but both can't be
enabled at the same time. Check to see that this isn't an issue on the
Samsung laptop.

If this doesn't work, pleas provide more info on what type modem he's using.

If you cannot log in even as administrator in safe mode, then it's probably
best to perform a repair installation, this is NOT the same as the recovery
console. Boot from the XP Home CD and choose the Install option. It will
then detect the existing installation and give you the option to repair it.
This will essentially reinstall XP over the top without damaging the already
installed programs. After doing this you will need to reapply any service
pack or updates already installed...
