I have a Western Digital 120MB USB drive. None of our XP
Home based computers will recognize the drive. I sent the
following message to Western Digital and they responded
back that it is a Microsoft problem:

When plugging in the drive an error message comes up that
installed USB mass storage device may not work correctly.

Device Manager lists the device with a yellow circled
exclamation point.

I have deinstalled the driver from device manager and then
reinstalled with the add new hardware wizard. The same
error message comes up with the USB device listed with the
yellow/exclamation.

I have tried this on two of our computers with Windows XP
home with the same results. Both are laptops with P4
chips. One is a 1.2Ghz with USB 1.1. The second is a
2.4Ghz P4 with USB 2.0.

The drive was first installed and used on two older
computers using Windows 98SE in March of 2003 and worked
fine at that time. The drive itself appears to be
operating properly.

Are the pin(jumpers) set correctly. If so,you can always
boot to xp cd,recovery, press enter key for password,at
the curser type:CHKDSK D: /p or /R for repair.
If its not recognized, type:DiskPart Then type:list disks
or list volumes DiskPart has a unique way of seeing all
hd info.Type:HELP for hd info in either screen, type:EXIT
to leave.D: being the disk in question
