Windows XP Home connecting to Local Area Network

What special steps are necessary to connect a Windows XP
Home PC (laptop) to a Windows 2000 server network? I've
seen some, but not definitive, evidence that XP is not
designed to connect to Local Area Networks. These
sources implied that XP Home is only designed to work in
Workgroups (peer to peer).

XP Home Edition works fine in a local area network that's set up as a
workgroup. XP Home Edition can't join a domain or log into a domain.
It can connect to a domain and access domain resources. For details,
