Windows xp home activaction on a new harddrive & ram upgrade

Hi all, just got a quick question, my laptop what i own came with a windows
xp home recovery cd, & i want to upgrade the harddrive from the 40gig &
256meg of ram that it came with to 160gig 2.5" ide & 1gig ddr 333, when i do
upgade will the recovery cd stop working and will i need to ring up
Microsoft to activate windows or will nothing change thx
 
The size for your hard drive should not stop the setup. The problem could be
the data that might be on the old drive. Some 'restore to factory defaults'
recovery CD's depend on data found in a hidden partition on the original
drive. Your Product Key will still work. Use diskmgmt.msc to look for
additional partitions on the old drive.

Cheers, the recovery cd that came with the laptop is just like a normall
version of windows xp home (oem) doesn't have a hidden section on the hard
drive so it's just a case of old cage out, new hard drive in the cage, screw
up & re-install, thx bud, so i don't need to re buy a new copy, is that the
same for the ram? if it is, thx again
 
Yes, you are right to look into it. OEM disks are occasionally completely
married to the hardware config. I think, however, in your case you are good
to go on HDD and RAM. The lack of a 'recovery partition' is key to that.
Your type of OEM disk is more versatile than some. If you were talking
motherboard change, you might have more trouble.
