Windows XP Hangs/Crashes

I am running Windows XP Professional version 5.1 (Service Pack 1) on a Compaq Evo N800c laptop. Now and then the windows either just hangs or reboots with a blue screen. The event causing this is unpredictable, sometimes it happens when you are using explorer, sometimes when using word and at other times when it tries to run screen saver. It is quite unpredictable and happens as much as 4-5 times a day. Very frustrating, do not know what to do. Couldn't find any patches. Can someone help?

Disable "restart on system errors" go to control panel
and open the system folder click on advanced then the
settings button in startup and recovery,uncheck
automatically restart.

If this is not your problem then check your event viewer
for any errors it could be a program running in the
background. Good luck
