Hi All: I am having a real problem with Windows locking up whenever
the USB is enabled in the CMOS setup. It locks up after Windows starts
but never lets me get logged in to any of the user accounts so I can't
check the device manager while it's enabled. There is no USB entry in
the device manager when I check it. I have tried clearing the CMOS on
the Mobo and it doesn't help. I have also tried installing a PCI USB
controller card (the mobo has onboard USB) and it also freezes after
Windows XP starts up. I don't really know where to go from here so I
would appreciate any suggestions you might have. This started after I
changed motherboards and reinstalled XP. Windows runs fine if the USB
is disabled.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I have seen this before. Turned out the computer was infected by a virus
and for some dumb reason the USB ports may have enable it.

I'm having this problem too, but don't think it is virus
related since I have completely started over. I have
completely wiped my computer and reinstalled windows xp.
After install of windows, I installed a usb2.0 pci card, and
windows recognized it and everything was fine. I could
then attach an external hard drive through it and it
recognized it no problem. Then...if I wanted to switch
user logins or logged off/on, I would get a black screen
instead of the usual login window where I could choose a
user. If I turned off the computer and removed the usb 2.0
pci card, it would again come up fine. With the usb 2 pci
card installed, I can come up in Safe Mode, but not in
regular mode. I also have a built-in usb 1 port on my
motherboard and I am not having any trouble with it. I
tried disabling it through the Device Manager to see if
that was what was conflicting with my other card, but it
didn't matter, still got the black screen! I've also tried
a different brand of usb 2 pci card, but I get the same
problems.

i have had this prob for 2 weeks and i have just found
out its the usb, my mobo has 4usb 2.0, 5th and 6th on the
front of my box, i just pulled the plug out and just have
the 4, now its ok, woohoo

Finally got this to work. Turns out that I had to update
my bios. I found a website that was very helpful in
helping me find out what I needed. If this happens to you,
