windows xp firewall error

my girlfriend got a virus on the system and ever since then I have not been
able to put my firewall on. what can i do to fix this problem.

Clean up the system? Seriously, you haven't told us anything about the
computer and whether it is clean or not. Go through these malware
removal steps systematically to be sure:

Then if the machine is completely clean and you still can't enable the
WF, try:

Start>Run>cmd [enter]
netsh winsock reset catalog [enter]
Follow prompts and reboot.
