Can anyone tell me why Windows XP's SEARCH utility is not
working? All I want to do is delete all Word and Excel
backup files (*.wbk and *.xlk). First I use the Search
function to find all of theses files. When the search
function is done (560 files found) I try to select all and
then delete. But my PC (Dell Inspiron 5100) hangs every
time. The deletion of all these backup files does not
occur and then and then my PC seems to go through a mini
self-restart exercise, taking me back to the desktop, but
not all functioning correctly as some system tray icons
are missing. Any ideas? Thanks!!

Hey Patty. Try try restarting the your machine with a hard boot by power off
button or by unplugging it and then restarting it. It that does'nt work do a
repair using your xp disk.

Can you delete single files or fewer files?

How much free space on your disk? I suggest you Enable Show Hidden Files and Folders. To enable show hidden files select Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View, Advanced Settings and place a check before Show Hidden Files and Folders.

Next Enter Windows Explorer and place the cursor on each drive letter in
turn, right click and select Properties. You need to ascertain for each
whether they are a hard drive ( or a partitioned part of a hard drive ) or a
CD or DVD drive? Also how large each hard drive is and how much free space
each has? Where it says Local Drive it is referring to a hard drive ( or a
partitioned part of a hard drive ).

The problem could be that you are trying to delete more at a single time than your Recycle Bin can handle. Empty your Recycle Bin by right clicking the icon on your Desktop and selecting Empty Recycle Bin.

Hope this helps.
