Windows XP DVD+RW Support

I'm not sure if the issue that follows is a function of Nero having been
installed or not. Well, let me explain this perplexing issue and get some
direction.

The OS does not recognize a DVD+RW with regards to writing. I can view the
contents of any DVD or CD but the OS thinks a DVD+RW is CD+RW and abandons
the "format", "write to", etc commands immediately. I cannot write to a
brand new DVD+RW, DVD+R, etc. but can read any media in the Sony DVD drive.

I honestly can't recall if this issue was present before I installed Nero
but to reduce the variables, I uninstalled Nero to see what would happen. No
change was observed. I now have no ability to write to a DVD unless I
reinstall Nero. I would rather use the OS' native abilities to manage
DVD+RWs.

Note that the Sony drive has the latest drivers, Device Manager is "happy"
with the hardware, etc.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Uninstalling Nero would do nothing to change the behavior of an OS such as
XP because it has never been able to write to any dvd +-r or +-rw, only to
cd's.

XP is "supposed" to be able to write directly to DVD-RAM media.
However, DVD-RAM media compatible DVD drives are very limited.

First of, thanks a bunch to everyone for jumping on my question and offering
suggestions.

Well, here's where I'm confused. Per the Microsoft OneCare forum, the XP OS
is able to format DVD+RWs, which implies to me that the OS is natively able
to "write" to a DVD+RW. I'm 95% certain that I used the native OS abilities
to write to DVD+RWs but given the replies to my post, it may have been from a
driver the Sony drive loaded. Correct?

I simply wish to get back a world where the OS is the sole means by which I
can format a DVD+RW, write to a DVD+RW, etc., without the need for Nero. How
do I get there from here?

Once again, thanks very much!

Thanks Bob. I understand what OneCare is and what is does. But to my
original inquiry, I'm 95% certain that once I installed the Sony DVD drive, I
could use the native OS capabilities to write to DVDs. Is it possible the
Sony DVD drive loaded a driver (i.e. OS capability) to write to DVDs?

Thanks again!
