I am having problems with my computer and I was told I
would have to reformatt my computer, in other words take
XP out and put it back in. Unfortunately my warranty
with HP has run out and the drivers Win XO were not
included in the purchase of my computer, they were
already installed. Do I need these disks to take to a
computer store to have this done or will they have the
drivers there and the Win XP?

Hi, Jane.

A few kinds of problems do require a reformat, but most reformats are
unnecessary overkill. If you post a few more details, we may be able to
save you a LOT of time and trouble. Understand, though, that this is NOT
Microsoft Tech Support. This is a peer-to-peer newsgroup and we are mostly
just users like you. Some of us have had experience with HP computers; like
most, I have not.

Are you using an HP computer, or HP peripherals - or both? Which drivers
are giving you problems? Printer? Scanner? USB? If you mention specific
makes and models, that might keep us from sending you down a blind alley.

Microsoft writes WinXP, of course, but OEMs such as HP often customize it in
ways that require special treatment. Sometimes the OEM is the only source
of support, even after the warranty expires. :>(

Unfortunately, people tell others to reformat and reinstall all
the time, but it's hardly ever the right thing to do. It should
be the last resort, to be done only after all other attempts at
troubleshooting have failed.

If you're having a problem, describe it here, as carefully and as
accurately as possible, including the exact text of any error
messages you receive. There's a good chance that someone here can
help you without your having to resort to reformatting and
reinstalling.
