Windows XP doesn't talk to the DNS server to help resolve URLs

I've been chasing an intermittent connect problem that's
become a solid failure. I've localized the problem to my
XP laptop. I's prefer not to have to re-install windows
and the attendent reloading of all the apps.

Symptoms: I can ping internet addresses in numeric form,
but can resolve URLs. I've got the right DNS entries
(loaded via DHCP using IPCONFIG/RELEASE and /RESTORE), and
the rest of my PCs on the same router work fine.. I
suspect reloading windows is what needs to happen, but
I've got a ton of applications that I don't have the
original media for any more.

Is there a way to do a partial install of the network
stuff that has to do with DNS?

Hi Rex,

Can you resolve names using nslookup? Is the DNS client service enabled and
running? Have you tried running "IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS"? Are there entries in
your HOSTS file?

Thanks,
