Hello,

I have an Adaptec 1210SA Serial RAID card with two 169GB hard drives
attached. I have it set up to do a mirror. For several months things
have been fine. I have lots of data on the disks and I have not had too
many problems.

Then yesterday after a reboot Windows no longer sees the logical drive
E: Its just not there. I go into Disk Administrator in XP and the disk
is listed as unassigned. So my choices are to reasign the disk as a
primary partition but that will lead to a format WHICH I DO NOT want to
do of course. So it seems somehow the disk has lost it partition table.

Any ideas on how I can recover the data or the fix the disk
signiture???

Thanks,

Pete

which of course means that you have had *some* problems.
you should mention the problems you've had in order to get the best help

OK. Sometimes E: would disapeer but a reboot always did the trick. I
have the latest drivers, firmware and Adaptec Java App. to config ure
the RAID. BIOS of HBA says everything is good and optimal. Java GUI
reports the same.

The first thing I'd do is shut the machine down...then unplug the card and
data cable(s)...
replug and try again.

If that does not help...try replacing the data cable(s)
and/or uninstall the raid card...
reboot, reinstall, reboot

I have uninstalled and reinstalled everything. I have not changed the
cables though. Windows still see the mirror but it is unassigned. I
have 90% backed up to tape but losing that 10 % would hurt...

did you physically unplug and replug everything?

also...if you were using mirroring...can you try just one drive at a time?

Yes...everything was unplugged...I did try one drive and nothing....

Well it could *possibly* be a defective data cable or raid card...

otherwise...

I suppose it may be time for a data recovery utility...
if you google...some have free trials

I have a copy of Disk Commander from Winternals. Its about 4 years old
though. Wish me luck...

Well in the end I lost data and that sucks, but at least I had 90% on
tape. Disk Commander could not find any damaged or recoverable fiiles.
I reassigned the disks to Windows and did a quick format and tried Disk
Commander again. Still nothing. Then I recovered every I had on tape
and I am more or less (a little less) back in business.

Thanks anyway..
