I just got a new computer and it's running windows xp pro.
It has a Pentium D, ASUS P5LD2 mobo, 2GB PC3200 RAM and a 250 GB HD...
Unfortunately the OS only sees 160GB...
Is there any way I can force windows to see the other half od the HD?

Thanks in advance,

FayeC

SP2?
What does Disk Management show on the drive?

Latest BIOS from motherboard manufacturer, SP2, and enable LBA48.

I have installed all the available updates and the last one is the
windows xp hotfix (sp2)
is that what you are talking about?

FayeC

ok....got sp2, got the latest bios but what the heck is lba48?
Sorry...not big on hardware here...

"How to enable 48-bit Logical Block Addressing support for ATAPI disk drives
in Windows XP"

I'm not sure that's your problem, though. The limit is 137 GB for the older
standard. If Windows sees 160 GB, then you probably already have LBA48
support.

How does the PC's BIOS detect the drive? Does it see the whole capacity?
(Because manufacturers list capacity in decimal units, and the OS uses a
binary form, the drive may appear as approx. 233 GB.)

Address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

FayeC:
First of all, you needn't be concerned with the Microsoft article Bob
mentioned. It really isn't relevant to your problem. Your motherboard
supports large-capacity drives, i.e., drives > 137 GB. We'll assume SP1
and/or SP2 has been installed to your XP operating system, right?

When you say your system "sees" only 160 GB of your 250 GB drive (actually
the drive's total capacity as detected by the OS should be about 232 GB)
could you explain that in more detail? When you access Disk Management
(right-click My Computer > Manage > Computer Management > Disk Management),
what do you see re that drive? Is it possible there's more than one
partition on that drive?
Anna

My bad...windows only recxognized 127gb before...now that I have
installed the full sp2 it had the rest of the hd showing as unassumed
so I went ahead and formated it.
you ended up answering my next question...it shows the two partitions
as a total of 234 gb and not the 250 the drive supposedly has listed
on the WD website for...
So the 234 is correct after all eh?

Thanks for the info :)
