Windows XP on my machine, while booting, does not reach
till the login screen.

I tried to run the OS repair utility and it did not help
any bit.

When I spoke with DELL representative, he ran me through a
series of steps and came to a conclusion that I need to
find a way to backup the data from 'My Documents' folder
before going ahead with re-installing Windows XP with
keeping intact the file structure.

Essentially, it appears to me that I can retain all data
contents apart from what is under 'My Documents'.

Can anyone please suggest how to do this ?
How do I back-up the 'My Documents' folder ?
Please note that I am not able to reach the login screen
of Windows XP.
I would appreciate any assistance in this regard.
Please let me know if I could help you helping me by
giving some more information.

Thanks,
- Atul

Try to start in safe-mode. Press F5 or F8 during start.
If you find the rigth key (F5 id my key) you will have
a "DOS-menu where you can choose safe-mode.
But you migth have a problem anyway: I*n not 100% but I
think CD/DVD-burner is not working un safemode.
So if you only have small "things" im My Documents it's Ok
to copy them to a floppydisc. If the "things" are big you
maybe can use Winzip to "spanned" floppydiscs. I have
tried this & sometimes it's ok, but sometimes one of the
floppys is bad & the hole operation fails. (Appr 5-10 MB
at 4-8 floppys).
When you run repair: don't Repair at first choice.
Select Install XP instead (or wath ever it says) & after
that you find a "new" Repair & that's the Repair one you
should use.
Hope you got any wiser...

Log in as Administrator go to your C:\Documents and Settings, then go
through all the profiles to check if you can get to my documents that way.

Good Luck!
