I turned on Windows Update last nigh on my HP laptop and
downloaded updates. This morning Windows would not open.
Tried to restore last known good configuration. Still does
not open. Any suggestions?

Assuming you have an actual XP CD as opposed to a recovery CD, try a Repair
install as follows:
NOTE, while a repair install should leave your data files intact, if
something goes wrong during the repair install, you may be forced to start
over and do a clean install of XP. If you don't have your data backed up,
you would lose your data should that eventuality occur.

Boot from the CD. If your system is set to be able to boot from the CD, it
should detect the disk and give a brief message, during the boot up, if you
wish to boot from the CD press any key.

Once you have pressed a key, setup should begin. You will see a reference
asking if you need to load special drivers and another notice that if you
wish to begin the ASR (Automatic Recovery Console) depress F2. Just let
setup run past all of that. It will continue to load files and drivers.

Then it will bring you to a screen. Eventually, you will come to a screen
with the option to (1) setup Windows or (2) Repair Windows Installation
using the Recovery console.

The first option, to setup Windows is the one you want and requires you to
press enter. When asked, press F8 to accept the end user agreement. Setup
will then search for previous versions of Windows. Upon finding your
version, it will ask if you wish to Repair your current installation or
install fresh. Press R, that will run a repair installation. From there
on, follow the screens.

If you only have a recovery CD, your options are quite limited. You can
either purchase a retail version of XP will allow you to perform the above
among other tools and options it has or you can run your system recovery
routine with the Recovery CD which will likely wipe your drive, deleting all
files but will restore your setup to factory fresh condition.

How did you receive the Windows Update, thru email? If
you did, you've downloaded a nasty virus/worm. If you
got a notice by "balloon" on bottom of screen by MS that
an update was available, you're OK, but need to do a
repair install. A Restore will not correct the problem
if you downloaded a virus. Scan your harddrive with an
anti-virus program such as Norton or McAffee. Below is a
free website to scan your PC:

The next URL is to remove the virus if you've got it:

I had a similar problem. But at least I got an error
message and a momentary opportunity to select F2 (Setup)
or F12 (Boot Menu). Neither the A drive, the C drive or
the D drive would respond. So I selected F12 (Boot Menu)
and clicked Start Up. I then disabled the A drive and
the C drive and selected the D (CD) drive as the startup
drive. I then ran the OPERATING SYSTEM REINSTALLATION CD
in the drive. Viola! The OSR CD corrected the
corruption on my hard drive (which was the reason for the
lock-up) and I had Windows XP again (together with all of
the data I thought I had lost forever! This saved me from
reformatting my hard drive and reinstalling Winddows XP.
Which was my suggestion a couple days ago in response to
another similar problem and before I discovered a corrupt
C drive was the my problem. Anyway my computer is up and
running again showing no ill effects - no thanks to
hackers and their viruses!!!

You do realize that different systems have different procedures? Some only
come with a recovery CD or recovery partition whose routine will wipe the
drive and reinstall and bring the system back to factory fresh condition.

We have no way of knowing what a user has for recovery purposes, an actual
XP CD which does have various tool for repair and recovery, a reinstallation
CD as you mention with a routine that apparently allows your system to
remain intact without losing any files or a simple recovery disk or
partition with a routine that wipes the drive and restores the system to its
factory fresh condition unless that information is contained in the original
post.
