Windows XP display

I have an issue with Windows XP Professional display,
When I open certain programs the program is not displayed
on the main screen but is shown minimised in the toolbar.
When I go to maximise it the program box shoots off to
the side of the screen & will not maximise or be shown.
How can I fix this problem?
